HyperBac Online - Licensing FAQs
How is HyperBac Licensed?
HyperBac offers customers a very simple licensing model. HyperBac is simply licensed per server. We do not care about the following:
• The number of database instances
• The size of your backup data nor
• The number of CPU’s
It is simply a HyperBac instance per server and nothing more.
What if I have a number of virtual servers on the one physical server?
You would typically use HyperBac Online to reduce your virtual server foot print, therefore your single instance per server is all that is required.
If in the very unlikely event you choose to compress a database running within a virtual server, then a HyperBac Online instance is required for that virtual server instance.
This second scenario will give you less benefit then using HyperBac Online to compress the overall virtual server footprint itself.
I have an active/passive cluster. How is HyperBac licensed in this case?
HyperBac Online needs to be licensed for each node of the cluster. HyperBac Online architecture requires that it is installed on each physical node.
What is the restore-only license?
Restore Only licenses apply only to HyperBac for SQL Server. HyperBac Online does not support the notion of restore-only scenarios.
Do I have to subscribe to the product every year?
No you don’t. HyperBac Online is licensed on a perpetual basis with the 1st year of software maintenance included in the price of the solution. At the anniversary of purchase you may elect to renew software maintenance to guarantee free support and upgrades.
If the you choose to forego their maintenance renewal, then the solution will continue to function.
What is the cost of migrating a license from one server to another?
HyperBac permits license migrations for those customers current under software maintenance. If you are moving a license from Server A to Server B, then this is attracts a small administration fee of USD $100 per license migrated.
I have HyperBac for SQL Server; can I just install and use HyperBac Online?
HyperBac Online is priced and sold as a separate product to HyperBac for SQL Server. If you have HyperBac for SQL Server (with software maintenance being current) and wish to upgrade a license(s) to HyperBac Online, then there is an upgrade path which offers significant discounts.
My support has expired, can I upgrade HyperBac?
HyperBac is licensed on a perpetual basis. If you do not renew software maintenance, then you can continue to use your presently installed product. Technical support will not be available to those whose maintenance has lapsed.
** HyperBac does not make past product releases available for general download. It is assumed that the customer is keeping a master copy at their premises.
If you try to upgrade HyperBac after software maintenance has lapsed, you will be able to install the new release, but it will not start because HyperBac recognises both the software version and maintenance expiry to determine product validity. In such a situation, you will render your deployed instance of HyperBac unworkable. You will be required to contact HyperBac support and renew your software maintenance to continue using the deployed HyperBac instance. Similarly you may revert back to the product release that you were running at the time of maintenance expiry.
